JEE Main 2024 Syllabus
The JEE Main curriculum aligns with NCERT textbooks, but the NTA establishes a separate syllabus covering topics from Classes 11 and 12, including Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. The syllabus for JEE Main 2024 remains unchanged, with no reduction in content.
Although JEE’s Main questions require strategic thinking, practice, and thorough preparation, they are relatively straightforward. Time constraint is a common challenge, so students should develop problem-solving and time-management skills for successful completion. Understanding every topic in the JEE Main syllabus is essential before starting preparations. Candidates should read the syllabus before studying to gain insights into essential chapters and create a suitable study plan.
To accommodate syllabus reduction decisions by education boards, the NTA allows a choice in one section of each subject in Paper 1 and Part I of Paper 2A and 2B. However, as applicable, the total number of attempted questions remains the same (Physics – 25, Chemistry – 25, Mathematics – 25). Here is a breakdown of important chapters for JEE Main 2023 by subject. Students should prioritise these chapters for exam success.

What is a Good Score in JEE Main?
A good score in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main can vary depending on factors such as the exam’s difficulty level, the candidate’s category, and the overall performance of all the test-takers in a particular year. JEE Main is a highly competitive exam conducted in India for admission to undergraduate engineering and architecture courses in prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
The JEE Main exam is scored on a scale of 300 to 360, with each subject (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) carrying a maximum of 120 marks. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the JEE Main exam, provides a percentile score based on the raw marks obtained by the candidates. The percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below a particular candidate. For example, if a candidate has a percentile score of 90, they have performed better than 90% of the candidates who appeared for the exam.
It’s important to note that the concept of a “good score” in JEE Main can vary depending on several factors, including the category of the candidate (General, OBC, SC/ST), the difficulty level of the exam, and the overall performance of the candidates in a particular year. However, here is the general idea of the percentile scores for different categories that can be considered good scores:
- General Category: A percentile above 95 can be considered a good score.
- OBC Category: A percentile above 85-90 score can be considered reasonable.
- SC/ST Category: A percentile above 75-80 score can be considered reasonable.

JEE Main Qualifying Cut off vs Admission Cut off
The NTA determines the qualifying cutoff, while each participating institute sets its admission cutoff. Meeting the qualifying cutoff makes candidates eligible for admission consideration, but meeting the institute’s admission cutoff is necessary for securing admission. It is crucial for candidates to understand the difference between these cutoffs and to check both to assess their eligibility and chances of admission.

JEE Main 2024 Counselling
JEE Main 2024 Counselling is how qualified candidates can secure admission to various engineering institutes in India. The counselling process is typically conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) for different categories of seats. First, JoSAA Counselling is conducted by offering admission to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and 29 Other GFTIs. Once JoSAA Counselling concludes, CSAB conducts different rounds of counselling for admission to the vacant seats after JoSAA and the other specific seats under CSAB NEUT, SFTI, etc.
JEE Main 2024 JoSAA Counselling
JoSAA Counselling, conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, facilitates admission to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 29 Other GFTIs. This counselling process combines JEE Main and Advanced qualified candidates.
- JoSAA consists of six rounds, with two special rounds called CSAB special rounds arranged if there are any vacant seats.
- After each JoSAA Counselling round, a category-wise opening and closing rank is published, serving as the JEE Main admission cut-off.
- The opening rank represents the lowest eligible rank for admission, while the closing rank indicates the highest eligible rank for securing admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIEST, or GFTIs.
JoSAA Seat Matrix
The JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) Seat Matrix represents the available seats in different engineering institutes participating in the JoSAA counselling process. Here is an overview of the JoSAA Seat Matrix:
- IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology): JoSAA provides admission to 23 IITs across India. Each IIT has a specific number of seats available for various engineering disciplines.
- NITs (National Institutes of Technology): JoSAA offers admission to 31 NITs, including NIT Warangal, NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, and others. Like IITs, each NIT has a designated number of seats for different engineering branches.
- IIEST Shibpur: The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur, formerly Bengal Engineering College, is a participating institute with a specific seat matrix.
- IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology): JoSAA conducts counselling for admission to 26 IIITs spread across the country, including IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi, IIIT Bangalore, and more. The seat matrix for each IIIT outlines the available seats in different specialisations.
- Other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes): 29 Other GFTIs participate in JoSAA counselling. These institutes include BIT Mesra, ISM Dhanbad, DTU Delhi, and many more. Each GFTI has its seat matrix allocated to different engineering courses.
Once the counselling notification is issued, JoSAA will release the revised seat matrix for the academic year 2023-24. Until then, candidates can consult the previous year’s JoSAA Seat Matrix to determine the available seats for admission to B.Tech/B.Arch courses in esteemed colleges across India.
