It is Central University located in Srinagar in Pauri Garhwal district in the state of Uttarakhand. University was renamed in 1989 in memory of leading statesman Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna.

University headquarters is situated at Srinagar & It is among the top 10 largest universities in the country with 3 campuses i.e. Birla Campus at Srinagar, BGR campus at Pauri, SRT Campus at Tehri. It has more than 161 affiliated colleges & institutes & examines more than 15000 students annually.
