What is the GATE Exam?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a nationwide entrance exam for admission into Master of Technology (MTech) and direct PhD programs at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other institutions across India. Additionally, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and State Electricity Boards (SEBs) use GATE scores for recruiting trainee engineers and scientists for group C-level positions.

The exam is organized on a rotational basis by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore, under the aegis of the National Coordination Board (NCB – GATE) and the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

How GATE 2025 Marks Are Calculated?

After the evaluation of answers, the actual (raw) marks obtained by a candidate will be considered for computing the GATE 2025 score. In the case of multi-session papers (subjects), the raw marks obtained by candidates in different sessions will be converted to normalized marks for that particular subject. Subsequently, either raw marks (for single-session papers) or normalized marks (for multi-session papers) will be utilized for computing the GATE score 2025, based on the qualifying marks.

Given the large number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers for GATE 2025 and the random allocation of sessions, authorities will utilize a normalization process to account for any variations in the difficulty levels of question papers across different sessions. This normalization is based on the fundamental assumption that “the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions” for all multi-session GATE 2025 papers.

To calculate the normalized marks for multi-session GATE papers 2025, authorities will employ the following formula:
