JEE Advanced is a national-level entrance exam conducted by IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). It serves as the gateway for admission into undergraduate programs in engineering, architecture, and science courses at prestigious institutions like IITs and ISM.
To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025, candidates must meet specific criteria. First, they should rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates (including all categories) in the JEE Main exam. Additionally, candidates must have passed their class 12th or equivalent examination in 2024 or 2025 with the required subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2000. Five years of age relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, i.e. these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1995.
Lastly, candidates should note that there is a limit to the number of attempts. A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in consecutive years. The JEE Advanced 2025 Eligibility Criteria outlines the requirements that candidates must meet to qualify for the exam. This total includes all categories, and the percentage allocation is as follows: 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 40.5% for the OPEN category. Additionally, within each category, 5% of seats are reserved horizontally for PwD candidates.

As per a Supreme Court ruling from February 2023, OCI/PIO candidates who obtained their cards before March 4, 2021, will be treated as Indian nationals for IIT seat allocation but will not be eligible for reservation benefits, except for OPEN-PwD. They must be included in the rank lists for OPEN or OPEN-PwD categories.
Age Limit for JEE Advanced 2025
Candidates must have been born on or after October 1, 2000, to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025. However, a relaxation of five years is provided to candidates belonging to SC, ST, and PwD categories. For these candidates, the birth date should be on or after October 1, 1995. This age limit ensures that eligible candidates fall within the prescribed range, with special considerations for reserved categories.
Number of Attempts for JEE Advanced 2025
Candidates are allowed to attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of three times in three consecutive years. This means that candidates must take the exam within three consecutive attempts starting from their first appearance in JEE (Main), ensuring they make the most of their eligibility period.
Appearance in Class XII (or Equivalent) Examination for JEE Advanced 2025
- Candidates must have appeared for Class XII (or equivalent) in 2023, 2025, or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- Those who appeared for Class XII or equivalent before 2023 are not eligible, regardless of subjects or number of attempts.
- If the Class XII results for the academic year 2021-22 were declared on or after September 21, 2022, candidates who took the exam in 2022 are eligible for JEE Advanced 2025.
- Candidates whose results for 2021-22 were declared before September 21, 2022, and had their results withheld will not be eligible.
Foreign National Candidates
Candidates who are not Indian citizens (neither by birth nor naturalization) will be classified as foreign nationals. However, this does not include Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) or Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) who acquired OCI/PIO status before March 4, 2021.
Foreign national candidates who wish to register for JEE (Advanced) 2025 are not required to appear for JEE (Main) 2025 and may directly register for JEE (Advanced) 2025, provided they meet the additional eligibility requirements outlined below.
All foreign national candidates are considered beyond the standard limit of 2,50,000 Indian national candidates permitted to appear for JEE (Advanced) 2025. Seats allocated to foreign national candidates are supernumerary, capped at 10% of the total seats per course. These candidates do not fall under reservation policies, including GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD categories, as detailed in the JEE (Advanced) 2025 Information Brochure. Furthermore, no additional seats or sub-categories are designated for female candidates within the foreign national supernumerary quota.
OCI/PIO Candidates
According to the Supreme Court of India’s decision on February 3, 2023, OCI/PIO candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card before March 4, 2021, will be treated as Indian nationals.
These OCI/PIO cardholders must meet all eligibility criteria specified for Indian nationals (criteria A1–A5) and must qualify in the Open and Open-PwD rank lists of JEE (Main) 2025 to be eligible for JEE (Advanced) 2025.
During seat allocation, OCI/PIO candidates with cards issued before March 4, 2021, will be considered under the OPEN category. They will also be included in the Common Rank List (CRL), CRL-PwD list, and the Female Supernumerary seat list, as applicable, if they qualify in JEE (Advanced) 2025. However, these candidates are not eligible for reserved seats under the GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, or ST categories.
Identity Proof: Candidates must provide identity proof in the form of a Citizenship Certificate, Foreign Passport, and/or OCI/PIO Card, as applicable.
