As per the Oriya Calendar, the first day of Vishubha Sankranti in Baisakhi is celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti. For some communities, Hanuman Jayanti is the precursor to Diwali, as it is celebrated a day before Diwali.

The celebrations on Hanuman Jayanti began early in the morning with the special Pooja being performed by devotees. The devotees perform the holy Pooja in temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman or at their homes. Indian people organize special prayers for lord hanuman to get rid of evil spirits.

The god is known for its magical powers. Prayers and hymns are sung by peoples all day. On this auspicious day of Hanuman, Jayanti people used to apply red sindoor from the lord’s feet on their foreheads. This is considered as being a ritual for good health and good luck.
