How is the CAT Percentile Calculated?
the CAT percentile calculation involves three key steps:
- Correct Answer Score: Candidates receive three marks for each correct answer in the multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
- Incorrect Answer Penalty: For every incorrect answer in the MCQs, one mark is deducted as a penalty.
- No Negative Marking in Non-MCQs: There is no negative marking for wrong answers in non-MCQ-type questions.
This pattern has been consistent in the CAT exam over the years, where candidates earn points for correct answers, face deductions for incorrect MCQ responses, and encounter no penalties for wrong answers in non-MCQ questions.
Steps to Calculate IIM CAT Percentile
- Section-wise Evaluation: Each candidate’s performance is initially assessed section-wise, determining scores for each section.
- Overall Score Calculation: The overall score is derived by summing up the individual section-wise scores, resulting in the candidate’s raw score.
- Normalization to Obtain Scaled Score: The raw scores are normalized to produce a scaled CAT score. This normalization process is used to standardize scores across different sections and slots of the exam, considering the varying difficulty levels.
- Conversion to Percentiles: These normalized scores are then converted into percentiles. Percentiles represent the candidate’s performance concerning other test-takers and are displayed on the CAT scorecard 2024. Percentiles indicate the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below a particular score.
CAT Percentile Calculation 2024
The CAT percentile calculation process remains consistent across all sections for CAT 2024, utilizing scaled scores. Higher percentiles generally enhance the likelihood of selection.
The steps outlined detail the process for calculating percentiles in the VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension) section of CAT 2024:
- Step 1: Total Candidates – Determine the total number of candidates (N) who appeared for all shifts (morning, afternoon, evening) of the CAT 2024 exam.
- Step 2: Assigning Ranks based on Scaled Scores – Assign ranks (R) to candidates based on their scaled scores achieved in the VARC section. If candidates obtain identical scaled scores, they receive the same rank. For instance, if two candidates achieve the highest scaled score in VARC, both receive rank 1, and the next highest scorer receives rank 3.
- Step 3: Calculating Percentile – Calculate the percentile score (P) for a candidate with rank (r) in the VARC section using the formula: P = ((N – r) / N) * 100
- Step 4: Rounding Off Percentile Scores – Round off the calculated percentile scores up to two decimal points. For example:
- Percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.995 round off to 100.
- Percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.985 but less than 99.995 round off to 99.99, and so forth.
What is the CAT Normalization Process?
The CAT exam for the MBA is held in various sessions, prompting the adoption of a normalization process to standardize candidates’ marks. This procedure aims to ensure fairness in evaluation across different test sessions and has been a consistent practice in CAT over the years, allowing a balanced assessment of candidates’ performances.
The CAT normalization process involves considering several parameters to standardize scores across different sessions. These parameters typically include:
- Highest Score: The top or maximum score achieved by candidates across all sessions is taken into account to understand the highest level of performance.
- Lowest Score: Similarly, the lowest or minimum score obtained among all candidates in various sessions helps in understanding the lower spectrum of performance.
- Mean Score: The average score calculated by adding up all individual scores and dividing by the total number of scores offers an indication of the central tendency of performance.
- Median Score: The median, or middle score when all scores are arranged in ascending or descending order, gives insight into the performance level that separates the higher and lower halves of the scores.
- Top 10 Percentiles: Understanding the performance of candidates in the top 10 percentiles helps gauge excellence at the upper echelons of the score distribution.
- Lowest 10 Percentiles: Similarly, analyzing the performance of candidates in the lowest 10 percentiles helps in understanding the lower end of the score distribution.
CAT 2024 Result: Important Instructions
- Only candidates who appeared for the CAT exam 2024 will have access to download the CAT result 2024 in PDF format.
- The result will be exclusively available in online mode; there won’t be a provision for hard copies sent via email or post. Candidates, however, can download the result online and print it for future reference.
- Both IIMs and non-IIM institutions are at liberty to utilize the CAT 2024 results based on their respective selection processes.
- The validity of the CAT 2024 scorecard extends for one year, concluding in the second week of January 2024.
What after CAT Result 2024?
Following the declaration of CAT 2024 results, candidates meeting the minimum CAT cutoff score will receive notifications from respective IIMs regarding further selection rounds. IIMs directly send interview letters to shortlisted candidates via email or registered/speed post, with selection criteria varying among different IIMs.
Generally, IIMs employ a selection process that includes the Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. Newer IIMs often adopt a Common Admission Process (CAP), requiring separate registration after the release of the minimum CAP cutoff percentile by the CAP conducting authority.
The final selection for MBA admissions involves evaluating various parameters such as CAT score, academic background, work experience, academic diversity, gender diversity, and performance in WAT/GD-PI rounds. These factors collectively contribute to the selection process and decisions made by the institutions.
